Inland

The inland villages

Naxos is the most fertile of the Cyclades, and it shows inland: marble villages, cultivated valleys, a mountain. It is the part short trips skip, and often the part people remember.

Chalki and Apeiranthos, the same road

Both villages sit on the same route and follow on from each other in a day. Chalki has a kitron distillery — the citron liqueur particular to Naxos — and a Byzantine church. Apeiranthos is built in marble streets.

Filoti, and the Mount Zas trailhead

Filoti is the village you climb Mount Zas from, the highest point in the Cyclades. Allow about three hours return, and take the path from the Agia Marina chapel rather than the one from the cave: it is far better marked. There is no water anywhere on the route.

The bus back

Buses do climb from Chora, but inland services are sparse. It is the return that catches people out, not the outbound: check the last bus before you set off.

What this page does not tell you

Inland bus timetables vary sharply by season, and we do not publish them: they would change faster than this page. Reconfirm them locally for your dates.
